The handmaid of the Lord sings a great song
Which echoes down all evenings in our praise
For God whose plans are ages, ages long
Whose thoughts are not our thoughts, ways not our ways.
Chosen by God in one place and one time
To compass in her womb – a little space,
The one whose promise through a family line
Fulfils the blessing given face to face
To ancient Abram, sonless wanting hope
To Isaac blind with time, and cheating son
And so to us who live and view the scope
Of lives of doubt and faith, of love hard won.
And we still waiting in this Advent time
Hope in God’s promises for human kind.
