What ISIS Really Wants – The Atlantic

The Islamic State is no mere collection of psychopaths. It is a religious group with carefully considered beliefs, among them that it is a key agent of the coming apocalypse. Here’s what that means for its strategy—and for how to stop it.

  1. The article rightly assets that “The reality is that the Islamic State is Islamic. Very Islamic… the religion preached by its most ardent followers derives from coherent and even learned interpretations of Islam.”

As to what ISIS really want, the answer is in the name. They want and Islamic State under Islamic law which expands until it is the only state. This ideology makes any stable peace with them very unlikely. They may accept a cease fire but they cannot abandon their aim without abandoning their identity.
