The Media Column: Freedom of speech is the name everyone gives to their mistakes – especially media groups -Independent

The need to understand the intersections of religion and civil freedom has never been greater. Hard-won human rights victories of the past century, for women, gays and free thinkers, are still opposed by zealots across the world, while people of faith are under persecution in many lands.

  1. This article begins with a consideration of these articles in the British press.
    http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/597444/Songs-of-Praise-Calais-BBC
    http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/jul/24/david-cameron-extremism-struggle-generation-abdul-wahid
    http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2015/aug/02/maajid-nawaz-how-a-former-islamist-became-david-camerons-anti-extremism-adviser
I find the Express criticism of the BBC to be so over the op as to be ridiculous
The two pieces from the Guardian by different journalists have a common subtext of criticism of David Cameron’s pronouncements. I would expect nothing less. The first lets a friend reply to his critics, all quite open and aboveboard. The second does include some innuendo and snide comments for which it has been rightly criticised. It does however include valuable information.

The headline “Freedom of speech is the name everyone gives to their mistakes” just does not follow from the contents of the article. The guardian pieces contribute to public debate and the Independent should present an alternative perspective, if it has one, rather than carping.
