For Gold and Country: Are the Olympic Games Worth It?

While not everything in the culture of a nation should be subjected to a cost-benefit analysis - if for no other reason that money is not and must not be the sole register of social "value" - perhaps there are different criteria by which the role of sport in our common life should be measured.
