By June of 2019 the number had doubled and the death toll was rising at an alarming rate. In July the World Health Organisation declared the outbreak a global health emergency, and the disease continues to be a major threat in East Africa, though it has yet to reach the terrifying proportions it attained in West Africa in 2017.
