In general, I suspect the Catholic church is more successful than protestants in exercising moral influence over its members. The result on same sex marriage is then perhaps surprising, although barely significant. The communication of morals has two elements, an appeal to reason and an appeal to authority. Even amongst those who accept the authority of the Bible it’s meaning is increasingly questioned.On morality these are several strands in catholic thinking such as their social teaching and natural law which are largely neglected by protestants. Protestants tend to draw on philosophy and are left with the inadequacies of utilitarianism.We would do well to consider not only what Catholics say but why they are saying it,
