Krish Kandiah: Two heresies that plague Christian engagement in politics- Christian Today

There are two equal and opposite heresies being enacted by Christians in the UK, and they are most visible when Christians engage in politics. They are particularly important because they relate to the very nature of God.

  1. It is natural to vote on the basis of self interest. many people will vote on the basis of health, education, child care first time buyers. This may be because it helps me or because it helps others i feel sympathy for. Christianity should enlarge sympathies so that what we want to help job seeks from the rest of the EU, asylum seekers and support the present level of development aid.

I see nothing wrong with Christians campaigning on abortion and euthanasia or the spread of casinos and lap dancing clubs. There is a danger of imposing our values on others but I think these issues represent a concern for the general good.

I was disturbed by the energy for political campaigning the church found when its own pocket was threatened by changes to VAT rules.
