Patrick Sookhdeo: Why the Barnabas Fund’s founder should keep silence – Christian Today

The founder of a major Christian charity is convicted of a sexual assault and on two charges of intimidating witnesses. He's given three-month community sentences for each offence and told to pay costs and a victim surcharge. At his conviction, the judge said: "You will be hugely punished by these convictions and your life will change for good."

  1. I largely agree with this. It seems outrageous for the Barnabas trustees to set themselves up as an alternative court of appeal, and expect the Christian public to just accept Patrick’s word against the woman’s. So I think he does need to resign, so as not to sully the reputation of the ministry. On the other hand, I think it is going too far to demand that he repents of what he says he has not done, before he can be restored to ministry. We only have two testimonies, so far as I know, and it is entirely possible that the court came to the wrong decision. Is it right that a possibly innocent man should have his ministry ended for ever?
