In the brief Conservative Party, and therefore Prime Ministerial, leadership contest in the summer of 2016, the former Tory chancellor Kenneth Clarke was caught on camera, with a live microphone, making unguarded comments about one of the front-runners, Theresa May. Theresa, he told his interlocutor, Malcolm Rifkind, was good at her job but a “bloody difficult woman”. Still, he went on, “you and I worked for Margaret Thatcher.”
